Leaders in nursing education and simulation from the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) Institute joined together with Synensys® to produce a Patient Safety and Improvement module focused on SBAR communication using StoryCare®.
“Over 70% of medical errors are the result of ineffective communication, said Synensys CEO Stephen Powell, using SBAR reduces errors and improves patient safety.”
SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) is a technique that can be used to facilitate prompt and appropriate communication. This communication model has gained popularity in healthcare settings, especially amongst professions such as physicians and nurses. It is a way for health care professionals to communicate effectively with one another and allows for important information to be transferred accurately. The format of SBAR allows for short, organized, and predictable flow of information between professionals.
StoryCare® is an online simulation library for nurses and other health professions that provides easy-to-access simulation exercises for faculty to include in existing undergraduate, graduate, and clinical education programming. StoryCare® simulations are designed to develop key QSEN competencies including Teamwork, Patient Safety, Quality Improvement, and Patient-Centered Care. Each StoryCare® simulation includes an audio case study, student guide, and instructor guide plus reflective discussion questions to enhance the individual or group learning experience. All you need is your laptop or mobile device to get started.
Dr. Mary Dolansky, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor, and Director of the QSEN Institute, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing had this to share about StoryCare, “There is a body of evidence-based research supporting the effectiveness of storytelling in learning. We should all be doing it… It helps to shape culture and norms and beliefs, is effective in adult education, and has been shown to help people to make sense of their life situations. Our students are exposed to so many critical life situations – certainly with COVID right now — and these stories can really help them to adjust to this and cope with this.”
